Family Workshop Series

Join us on the second Saturday of the month for an interactive hour of hands-on learning about the Mercer Slough. We will cover a variety of topics for all ages to enjoy. Donations are welcome for participation in this program. Workshops are 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.

The Science of Cattails - November 14 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
What has a tail like a cat but loves the water? Why, it's cattails! Seeing a cattail plant is a sure sign that you are entering a wetland since they grow high with their feet planted in the water. Learn how they do that; then explore all the different edible parts of a cattail, what animals feast on it and how cattail fluff is an important resource for people and the plant.

Baby Birds & Bunnies - December 12 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Brr! It is cold outside! Explore why baby animals love to call the Slough home and how they survive the wetlands in the winter. Does fur really keep an animal warm? What are they eating to keep their tummies full?

Water, Water Everywhere - January 9 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Did you know that the earth is 70% water and that our bodies are too!? Water is an important resource in our world. Do the WATER CYCLE BOOGIE and become a rain drop as you learn about the water cycle. Follow the trail of water as it travels through our watershed and learn the important role wetlands play to clean our water.

Wild About Tracking - February 13 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Bounders, trotter and walkers, oh my! Learn about the different gaits and tracks left behind by local creatures. Investigate the difference between an otter and muskrat track. Create your own track mystery and take home your own "wild" animal track.

Creature Features - March 13 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Look up close at the skulls of some local creatures that call the Slough home. Why do beaver have their eyes on top of their head and coyote in the front? Learn about the difference between predator and prey as you explore the different characteristics of teeth, skulls and scat.
