Join us on the second Saturday of the month for an
interactive hour of hands-on learning about the Mercer
Slough. We will cover a variety of topics for all ages to
enjoy. Donations are welcome for participation in this
program. Workshops are 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
The Science of
Cattails - November 14 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45
p.m.
What has a tail like a cat but loves the water? Why, it's
cattails! Seeing a cattail plant is a sure sign that you
are entering a wetland since they grow high with their feet
planted in the water. Learn how they do that; then explore
all the different edible parts of a cattail, what animals
feast on it and how cattail fluff is an important resource
for people and the plant.
Baby Birds &
Bunnies - December 12 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45
p.m.
Brr! It is cold outside! Explore why baby animals love to
call the Slough home and how they survive the wetlands in
the winter. Does fur really keep an animal warm? What are
they eating to keep their tummies full?
Water, Water
Everywhere - January 9 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45
p.m.
Did you know that the earth is 70% water and that our
bodies are too!? Water is an important resource in our
world. Do the WATER CYCLE BOOGIE and become a rain drop as
you learn about the water cycle. Follow the trail of water
as it travels through our watershed and learn the important
role wetlands play to clean our water.
Wild About Tracking
- February 13 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45
p.m.
Bounders, trotter and walkers, oh my! Learn about the
different gaits and tracks left behind by local creatures.
Investigate the difference between an otter and muskrat
track. Create your own track mystery and take home your own
"wild" animal track.
Creature Features -
March 13 - 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.
Look up close at the skulls of some local creatures that
call the Slough home. Why do beaver have their eyes on top
of their head and coyote in the front? Learn about the
difference between predator and prey as you explore the
different characteristics of teeth, skulls and scat.
