Strange Matter
(February 2 - May 4, 2008)
Enter the absorbing
world of materials and uncover the surprising science
behind the stuff we use each day. Get a glimpse of physics,
chemistry, engineering and where materials research might
lead us. Material scientists work with the tiniest bits of
matter - molecules and atoms - in order to discover and
create entirely new materials. Become a materials scientist
and attempt to smash glass, crush a can, create foam, make
slime, grow crystals and more! Marvel at a piece of aerogel
foam - the lightest material ever made - and see its weight
balanced by a tiny piece of glass. Bend and twist metal and
watch in amazement as it returns to its original shape! Go
ahead and touch it - we dare you! Discover just how strange
matter can be! →

Exploring Trees Inside
and Out
(February 9 - May 4, 2008)
Explore and discover
the many aspects of trees - from the inside out, from the
roots to the leaves, as a habitat for other living things,
and as a resource for people. Preschoolers and early
elementary students can crawl inside a giant leaf, climb a
"tree" from roots to canopy, or investigate inside a fallen
log.
SPEED
(May 31 - September 1, 2008)
Accelerate and break
the sound barrier! Test your skills as a world class
downhill skier, take a virtual bobsled ride and build your
own rollercoaster! Experiment with race cars, planes, boats
and eccentric custom vehicles to test the limits of
velocity. These interactive experiences focus on the
science and technology of pushing the envelope to achieve
record setting speed while explaining the limits of getting
there. SPEED is divided into five areas. Explore the
sources of speed in PUSH, build your own race car and test
its performance in GO, investigate the speed of sound and
light in ZOOM, find out what can impede your speed in DRAG,
and in STOP discover how your own penny is transformed in
the Penny Smasher, allowing you to see the affects of speed
during rapid deceleration. Do not delay! Rev your engines
and zoom in to discover the science of Speed!
Speed was created by
COSI Columbus with support from the National Science
Foundation and in cooperation with the Science Museum
Exhibit Collaborative.
