Public Conversations About Science

From clean water to cell phone reception to flu vaccines, science and technology are deeply connected to everyday life. Even those who think they don't know much about science often have a lot to say about its connection to social issues. With a "Museums for America" grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Pacific Science Center has launched a project to engage Washington state residents in discussions about the science in their lives.

Science Conversations for Ongoing Public Engagement, or SCOPE, is a two-year project that allows the Science Center to hold public forums about science and technology and to expand the Science Café program to two additional locations in the Puget Sound area. Forums at selected community centers will give residents a chance to deliberate about science-related issues relevant to their community while their children enjoy free educational activities from our Science On Wheels education outreach program. The award also provides funding for partnering on programs at other cultural organizations - Seattle Art Museum and Seattle CityClub will host forums later this year.

Our popular Science Cafés bring scientists into neighborhood pubs for informal talks about their research. With SCOPE grant funding we launched the Eastside Science Café in January 2010, where Dr. Katie Peichel talked to a full house at Wilde Rover, an Irish pub in Kirkland, about the evolution of tiny stickleback fish in Lake Washington. "I got some very thought-provoking questions," Peichel said, "such as, 'Why is this work important to society?'" The Eastside Science Café, a partnership with KCTS9, happens the second Monday of every month at Wilde Rover in Kirkland, and the Queen Anne Science Café, a partnership with KCTS9 and Science on tap, still takes place the first Tuesday of the month at T.S. McHugh's in lower Queen Anne. Science Cafés are free, open to all ages and no science background is required. Stay tuned for information about our third Science Café location, to be launched this fall in Tacoma.
