It would appear THE summer blockbuster has arrived. Superman Returns: An IMAX® 3D Experience is getting rave reviews from fans leaving the theater. We were unable to find anyone who wasn't just blown away.
Here's a quick sample of comments we heard after a special early morning showing on June 28:
"Stunning!"
"Unbelievable!"
"I hope they do more with 3D."
Our own opinions follow along similar lines. The entire film is not in 3D, but those scenes that are will have you saying the same. The flying sequences put you as close as you can get to flying with the Man Of Steel without being Lois Lane.
And while it doesn't get as much attention as our huge screen and the special effects, we have to give a shout out to the artists who provided the audio. The surround sound system in our Boeing IMAX Theater is nothing short of awesome and the sound track is every bit as good as the visuals.
Things To Watch For
Certainly be on the lookout for the icons that let you know when to put on the 3D glasses(see below). All of the 3D scenes are just spectacular, but the one that seemed to get the most oohs and aahs during the showing we saw was when he drops the boat. That's all we'll say. Also, if you are a fan of the old 50s TV series "Adventures of Superman," then pay close attention to the dying Gertrude and the bartender. See if you can't recognize them.

But if the entire film isn't in IMAX® 3D,
how will the audience know when to put on the glasses? It's
easy. The film's director, Bryan Singer, is a huge
supporter and fan of IMAX® 3D, and personally designed a
simple, effective way to prompt the audience when to put
their IMAX® 3D glasses on and when to remove them for each
of the four separate 3D sequences. His goal was to create
prompts that were simple and would not interrupt the film.
Here's how it works:
1. Preceding the start of each 3D sequence, 3 green icons,
representing 3D glasses, will rise up from the bottom of
the screen and remain flashing on-screen for between 3 and
5 seconds, prompting the audience to put their IMAX® 3D
glasses on.
2. Following the end of each sequence 3 red glasses icon
will appear in similar fashion, reminding the audience to
remove their IMAX® 3D glasses.
In addition, our ushers will be advising the audience
members as they enter the theater and will answer any
questions you may have.
The film is rated PG-13 for "some intense action violence"
and runs 2 hrs. 33 min. More at the official
Warner Brothers Web
site.
